Sissy Bar Clearance Issue

Just purchased a H-D Detachables Sissy Bar Upright, Part Number 52610-09.

Has anyone run into a right side shock interference problem when mounting a sissy bar?
The rack hits the shocks coil spring retainer cap. (don't know what else to call it)

If so, what was your fix?

Options I'm considering at this point:
1) Shim the shock out on the top post to acquire enough clearance
2) Grind clearance relief in the sissy bar
3) Grind clearance in the bushing on bottom (P/N 52682-09)
4) Turn shock upside down

At $180 bucks, one shouldn't have to revert to grinding or have this interference fit.

Any ideas of suggestions appreciated.

Update!!! Update!!! Update!!!

Spoke with HD technical support and there is a reported interference fit issue!

HD's bulletin (failed to get bulletin #) states to "Remove right rear shock and re-mount in the inverted position".

It appears a .125" washer will provide enough clearance for fitment (if you don't want to invert the shock). I'll know that exact thickness once measurements are taken using a micrometer. If it's different than stated above, I'll correct the entry.

I THINK I understand where you say clearance is lacking and if I am correct would it be easiest to slightly bend the sissy bar uprights inward enough to fit onto the shock struts. It would be easier than grinding.

Good idea but no, not without modification of the bushing thickness. The bushing itself would prevent it from moving further inward because it hits the shock post coming off the frame. I agree, grinding is not a good option for sure!

See "update" in my previous post.

I have heard about the 15 issue with inverted shocks leaving MOCO.. what a pile of poo!! Disappointing.

Sounds like that is what you need to do is invert the shock.... the way it's supposed to be... seems as though many sleds left production with shocks on upside down... no joke!

I didn't know about that but after looking at both shocks, it makes sense. The stationary end is up on the left and down on the right. Guess I'll be inverting the right side to the correct position! Thanks for the information!

I would take it back to the dealer point that out and get some free stuff to keep you quiet lol

It's not a secret guys.. I believe there is a bullitin out

You're right, there is a bulletin out. Took a call to HD to find that out though since us DIY folks don't have access to them. We only have the forums, asking a dealer or going straight to HD unless someone has access to https://www.h-dnet.com/

I know this thread is kind of old but in doing some research I've found that H-D released Service Bulletin# M-1386A that relates to the shock having been installed upside down (shaft pointing down) on the right side at the factory on some Touring models. This can prevent detachables from seating properly. I haven't personally seen the document as it's only available to the MoCo and Dealers. Apparently it says to take the affected bike to a Dealer so they can flip the right side shock upside down.

Yes it can and does...

I apologize for bringing this thread up again but I was scratching my head after installing new docking hardware for a sissy bar on my buddies 15 SGS in Moroccon Gold. If your standing by the tail pipe and trying to attach the sissy bar with the plastic U shaped notch by the right shock, the chrome is biting into the top cap of the shock. I'm glad I found this thread I advised him to take it to the Dealer since it's still under warranty and ask them to fix it.

HD must have installed a slew of these shocks upside down! Glad the thread helped.
