Recall for the recall.

Were they (HD) supposed to be sending out a "formal" recall letter like they did with the clutch issues? I never got one..My bags seem quite tightly secured, what do I look for to know if I have the problem?

Contact your dealer with your vin # and they will tell you if your bike is involved in recall

So, on Saturday I was at Bergen County HD in NJ waiting in line to get my 5000 mile service done. A gentleman by the name of Joe, representing a company called Bagger Bolts started talking to a couple of the guys hanging around. He showed us the recall for the recall paperwork that is starting to make the rounds and then started to fill us in on his product. He makes replacement bolt kits with a tool that work very nicely. He started to explain the weight that the stock and recall kits could manage. Apparently they can only carry fifteen pounds worth of gear in each bag before becoming overloaded. A couple of the guys had the saddlebag speakers and amplifiers which are indeed pretty heavy. Anyway, he was able to prove that his new bolt setups could handle up to 100 pounds of weight per bag. He did this by having a gentleman who said he was about 200lbs stand inside the saddlebags that were mounted with the new bolts. He also demonstrated how easily the saddlebags can be ripped off of the bike with the stock clips. Just a turn of a flathead screwdriver and Pop, the come right off. I couldn't believe it.

He is in the process of selling the patent to HD, our dealer is already selling his bolts in the parts department. So, for $40 I decided the risk/cost factor was well worth it. He then offered to install them for me right there. Can't get any easier than that, so I stepped aside and let the guy take care of business. While popping out the first set of clips, the front had already broken. My bag was only being held on by one clip. Just a matter of time before I lost my bag. Did I mention that I already had the new recalled clips? Only 1500 miles on em and one had already failed.

One more thing, as I said, he is selling the patent to HD. If you think that HD isn't gonna put the HD symbol on the bag and sell them for $80, you are probably wrong. I would highly suggest getting a set before that happens.

Lastly, I just want to let everyone know, I do not work for Bagger Bolts. I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

End of story.

I bought the bagger bolts a few months ago when guys on here started talking about bags falling off. I like them.

I did get a formal letter in the mail from Harley for this recall I still have not got it done yet though as I already took care of the issue I just want Harley to replace my damaged lid from when my bag fell off before the recall

No formal letter to me yet but the Monkey bolts are the same ones you pick up at Lowes of Home depot. Really simple 5/16 bolt 1.5 inches long with a knob on the end with a fender or body bolt that clips on. I went with the Reda ones and I think they were 21 or 22 dollars because I was to lazy to go get mine. Of course a Lowes is 200 miles away Home depot is 75.

I know this is an old thread. Just picked up a used 2014 SG. The previous owner told me he had the recall done. So from what I'm reading the newer version of the recall of the quick disconnect bags are no better? Every thing I've seen are bolt downs and not quick disconnect. So is the suggestion to go with the solid bolts rather than the spring loaded ones...

Maix- You can do so much better and cheaper buying the hardwae from Home Depot or Lowes.

I bought a set of the Reda Knobs, and only installed two of the four, replaced the front dzus (quick release) fastener in each bag with the Reda, got 7k on it that way and no issues, and even did a 2200 mile trip to Texas, with the bags loaded to the gills (and over weight), and never had an issue.

Recall for the recall.

Can someone confirm whether there's still an issue? I bought my SG late 2015 and they did the recall replacement before I took delivery, and I have the "official" recall completion notice . I have zero problems with the factory fasteners, and if anything they are a little snug and definitely not loose or at risk of backing out. I've also not heard any complaints from any of my riding buddies. Is this still an issue to be concerned about?

I had the dealership perform the recall on my 14 SGS but i still replaced them with the aftermarket clips and thumb bolts. Super simple and fast to remove when needed. Just a little piece of mind for me.
