Is it getting out of hand?

Tonight on the way to work (I work graveyard shift) I was enjoying my 40 minutes of cruise control riding when a car approached my rear end and then drifted back ... Repeat several times. Then they drove passed me. Being dark out I could see they were texting. I thought this could have turned ugly in a split second. Loss of focus on the road and another rider under the tires of a cage( excuse the old biker terminology) I was passed by a total of 5 cars 3 were texting. I know most drivers don't think about the danger. Is it time for technology to curb texting while driving... Is it even possible? Thoughts? We face enough dangers on our scoots without texters.

Grumpy,
I agree 100%. Despite texting being illegal and the dangers of inattentive driving motorists continue to ignore the fact that they possibly are putting themselves and others in harms way. Some have no idea of the repercussions. So yes if there is a technology that can prevent texting while driving I believe it is past time to implement it. Some folks just need a baby sitter

People are addicted to texting. My grandson was talking to me face to face, glanced at his phone, and texted while looking me in the eye. Insane behavior. It will take some sort of technology to stop texting while driving, because people are not going to stop on their own.

1Grumpyguy, another issue you indirectly bring up is tailgating. That is a pet-peeve of mine. It is extreeeemly bad in my area. The law could make a fortune writing tickets for tailgating and stop this behavior, but it goes ignored. But, that is another subject.

I agree it's time to do something about this a couple years ago. I notice the same thing driving out west here people just don't think about it and it's not just the younger generation. Be nice if the technology would disable the phone as soon as it starts moving even at walking speeds.

I have to admit texting is handy under the right pretenses, but driving is not one of them. Also, Bones brings up a good point... People's social skills have gone to crap. Some personal interaction is needed to develop and maintain them.

Good point Bones and I agree. Drivers are following way to close because everyone is in a hurry now days.
Back in the early 70's my work car was a 65 Ford Galaxy and I had been rear ended while driving it. Pushed the back end in and mashed it up a bit but the lights worked and I twined the trunk closed so I kept driving it. It was the perfect car for traffic control. No one tailgated me and to switch lanes I just flipped on the signal and started drifting over and you could hear the brakes behind me. LOL!

Blues, I can picture that old Galaxy and the people getting out of your way...I just laughed out loud. 😬

My first car was a 1952 Pontiac. It had a sofa in the front and a sofa in the back. I had it painted metallic turquoise with the $99 Mako special offer. People, children, dogs and the mailman ran when they saw me coming. I even put in the original wolf whistle. What a tank! It had eight cylinders straight in a row. Don't mean to crash this thread, I just get gabby. I'm glad I didn't grow up with texting. I would hate for all that texting to interfere with the fun we were having talking to each other.

I think they should allow law enforcement to take them as evidence and make the people who were driving and texting go to the morgue and sit though an autopsy before getting their phone back. Let them see what their aggravated stupidity can do.
