I had just turned 14 when I bought my new 1960 Cushman shown in this picture. (I came across this picture today while looking for something else.)
I had mowed lawns, emptied and loaded a million semi-trailers, and any other job that paid one dollar per hour. Looking at this picture of me I reckon I was one of the orginial Blues Brothers. Gas was 20 cents. It took one dollar to fill the tank and I could ride all week. She was a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton, kick start, two speed suicide shift. Looks like I should have lowered the seat and added ape hangers.
Top end was 45 mph. I was in heaven.
