Need feedback...
I went to syn oil at first service on my 2013 SG. I asked about change intervals and was told they could be extended to every 4000 miles. Sound right?

Oil change intervals are listed every 5K using synthetic oil on the new bikes aren't they?

I'm surprised the don't come out of the box with synthetic! wonder why?

I heard that the rings seat better with fossil oil. I've also heard not to switch to synthetic till 5000 miles for the same reason.

Was at the dealership yesterday discussing my first 1k service. Service manager said most guys switch at the first service. Him included. He also added that he has heard of Harley name oil not being the greatest per non-MOCO certified engine builders. I asked about switching myself and he offered a few suggestions. I did not ask if it would affect the warranty though. I read a MOCO bulletin warning about switching to different oils. It may or may not affect warranty. Did not come right out and say it would.

CVOs do. Not sure why???

BMW motorcycles have gone fully synthetic from new too. Owners were also complaining that the bikes didn`t bed in correctly. I spoke to a mechanic about this and he told me- "They are just copying the car section. They realise that their cars now took 30 to 35k to bed in and stop burning oil but they had reduced warranty claims".

He recommended I run standard mineral oil until 6k service then switch as the fully synthetic oil was better.

So my guess on CVO`s is the same. Having said that I am sure Harleys run hotter so the better oil works more effectively in the Screaming Eagle engine.

The problem with the CVOs running hotter is no longer a factor with the cooled heads in 2014. They still put in the syn oil.

Here's some good info to read (my blog on this site) and you can make your own informed decision on oil etc.

Lubrication

Break-In

There is no scientific evidence that synthetic oil causes engine break-in issues. From MobilOil.com:

MYTH: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic like Mobil 1™ oil.
REALITY: You can start using Mobil 1 synthetic oil in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 synthetic is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in:

Acura RDX
Aston Martin DB9, DB9 Volante, DBS, DBS Volante, Virage, Virage Volante, Rapide
Bentley Azure, Brooklands, Continental Flying Spur, Continental GT, Continental GTC, Mulsanne
Chevrolet Corvette Z06, ZR1 and Grand Sport Coupe
Chevrolet CR8 and COPO Camaro
Citröen DS3
Holden HSV
Lexus LFA
McLaren MP4-12C
Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles
Nissan GT-R
All Porsche Vehicles
Peugeot RCZ
Vauxhall VXR8
Viper Motorcycles

Good break in article...I'm picking up my '14' SGS in a few weeks...I'll be trying this method

I just go with good old fashioned dinosaur oil...... Figure the bike came with it, so why change it! You can only synthesize so many things, IMHO....... Only real dinosaurs will do for me, not a plastic synthesized dinosaur!
