Agree... Perhaps it's just me, but I consider the fact my home is locked and not nothing in it belongs to them PLENTY WARNING.
Update... My boss at work is military trained part time FireArms Instructor at local Gun Range.. Lol.. We never discussed it. He is now helping me with finding the right weapon of me and training. Agree on the pump shotgun

You are wise to get some professional advice and training.
Go to a range and rent several guns and find what fits you most.
Keep it simple. And practice, practice, practice.
Then get your concealed carry license.
If you can afford one, get an alarm. Motion detectors work great.
And ALWAYS pay attention to your dogs behavior.
Glad to hear you got through this robbery attempt unscathed.
But, be aware, the sorry scumbags will probably try again knowing you have a bike. They will likely come back when you are not home, so think serious about the alarm.

Living in IL every little thing you can do to help cover your arse is a good thing.
I'm sure everyone has read story's about the POS winning in court for a hefty amount of money from the home owner they were robbing, etc ?

We keep a Remongton 870 tactical at home with Taurus 9mm and S&W 686 as backups. I have an AR-10 chambered for .308 Winchester, but it's not much good for home defense.
I had to use a gun once. About 20 years ago in NC a guy broke into the house. Me and the dog rounded the corner and met him face to face. The dog took off after him. He shot the dog and I shot him. I hit him just above the knee with a Desert Eagle .50. Cops came and looked at the damage, looked at my gun and hauled the guy off. I rushed the dog to the bet where they removed the bullet and fixed him up.
About 2 months later, the same guy was in a cast and decided to rob another house. The guy he robbed emptied a shot gun in his back as he was trying run for the door. That's natural selection at work.

I was told by more than one cop that if I had to shoot someone in self defense at home, make sure you do it in the house and make sure you shoot to kill.

It's all great to say how a burglar should be shot, and how each of us would shoot them and blah blah...but it's a totally different thing to actually shoot, much less to kill someone.
And as for right or wrong in the eyes of the law, that varies from not only state to state, but from court to court, judge to judge and jury to jury. It is left for VERY open interpretation of the law there.
In your house, not your yard. Feared for you life or another within your house, no other option (couldnt run away) etc etc. Those are key factors, yes, but still open to interpretation.

Unless you're well trained for such a high stress situation, placing a non-lethal warning shot intentionally is all but impossible. When someone is shooting at you, you are generally not aiming, just pointing in that general direction. That's why a shotgun should be the weapon of choice. If you aim low, the shot is less likely to be lethal...if that's what you're going for. Just be aware that the life you saved by making a warning shot will likely sue you.
I was served by the guy that I shot. They got a lawyer to take the case on contingency. After someone else finished him off, their lawyer realized it was a lost case and retracted his services to his family. I probably would have won, but it would have cost me a few grand to find out. As the cops say..."Dead men can't sue".
It does vary state by state. Southern states are usually far more forgiving.

The only warning shot I give is to the head......otherwise its to the biggest body part where its harder to miss.
