Electric Bikes?

Last Fall I got to test ride the Project Livewire bike at the Harley Dealer in Bergen County NJ while getting my bike serviced.

I must say it was absolutely amazing. There was a group of about 8 of us, and we only rode them for 6-7 miles. When I first got on and was shown how to start the machine, I was a little less enthused. No sound. None. No vibration... Is this thing even on? The guy next to me seemed to have the same "what the hell?" look on his face.

Then after several minutes of whatever the hell they were doing at the front of the pack, we were off. And running. Holy smokes, from the parking lot to the first traffic light (about 500 feet) got me smiling from ear to ear. Instant Power. Claimed 0-60 times were 2.8 seconds. Insane. I believe those numbers, though I can't verify them. The bike was swift, agile, and super fun to ride. Notice I didn't include comfortable? While it would be a great commuter for my 7 mile ride to and from work through Brooklyn and Manhattan, I couldn't imagine putting high mileage on it. Thankfully, I think it's range was about 100 miles. You would have to peel me off that thing if I did 100 miles.

I love the sound of my Street Glide, absolutely LOVE IT. Somehow, I didn't really miss the sound on the Livewire. The power was all I needed on that thing. Maybe it could use one of those train horns on it if necessary...

Do I want one? Absolutely. Would it become my commuter? Definitely. Do I want to pay what they think they'll be asking for one? Hell No. They suggest it will be in the 35K range, which puts it well out of my reach, considering how much I have in my Glide. And there's no way I would replace the Glide with an Electric bike. There are other manufacturers that are developing and selling e-bikes, and when one comes along in the 12-15K range I may consider getting one to add to the stable. The idea of brakes and tires being the only real components needed to maintain, it could be an economical choice.

Would love to hear other peoples thoughts on E-bikes. Has anyone else ridden any of them?
