Was not sure where to post so here seems good as any as this is a 2 fold post.
Woke up this morning at 3am to my Daschund growling very low at the foot of the bed. I've never heard him do this before. My "normally fearless" boy was scared. Heard some noise coming from the garage and grabbed my "enforcer"..M1 .30 Carbine and went to the garage door. Two jerkoffs jimmied the door and we're trying to wrestle my Bike out of the garage. They scattered when they saw the barrel pointed at them and heard the round chamber. Thankfully the bike dropped onto the side stand.. Lol. A quick stash of the gun and a call to the cops. Never heard back from the cops except to file a report for the insurance folks. Poor dog didn't get brave till they were gone..
Bought a good chain lock first thing.

Main question.. I'm not sure it's even legal to own the .30 let alone use it in self defence. I know a lot of you guys discuss the topic of carry so I'm asking for some advice on a good handgun to own for self defence and be able to carry. I'm familiar with Florida State Laws and have a clean record. I want to be able to protect myself, family, and property. It's an unfortunate fact it's an ugly society these days and way to many seem to think they can just take what they want.. Feel free to PM any info or post here. I did grow up around guns but just never felt the need for one. The carbine was a gift from my father in law.. It was his in WWll and sentimental to me. Thanks guys..
Glad to be alive and not having to fill out stolen bike report.

Sorry to hear of your "situation" ... on a side note...."Enforcer carbines" are too modern to be made in WWII & are commercial made not GI issue.

Ride safe,
Chris

First glad to hear things didn't go worst. I haven't bought one yet however I like to recommend the handguns that shoot a 410 shell. The Judge or Governer effective for defensive type close encounters and reduces chance of a round ending in a neighbors house. A liability/responsible concern that we al should be aware and cautious of. Wish I had an M1....

Learn from yesterday,
Live for today,
Hope for tomorrow.

The enforcer version M1 .30 Carbine would have to be registered as a SBR here in our state, not sure about Fl.

This ^^^^^ there is now a lightweight version of the "Judge"....load it with a couple of 410 shotgun rounds and back it up with a .45 long Colt for some added stopping power just in case you get some PCP freak coming at you as this weapon can chamber both.

These are outlawed in CA as they are considered a less than standard length shotgun or some other legal BS they use but in AZ and most other states you can get one and keep yourself and your family safe.

All the best!!!

As stated... just want to clarify some:
Higher powered rifle rounds will penetrate bodies very easily.... and keep right on going. They'll go thought several layers of plywood/sheetrock and even a 2x4 or two (youtube it, there's plenty of demos out there). Unless your neighbors all live in brick houses without windows, use a shotgun for home defense.
It's luck of the draw if you hit bone or not. If so, a bullet might not go through your house or your neighbor's house.... but don't take the chance.

Also, remember that a high velocity handgun round (9mm) will go through a person in the same manner... as well as the drywall in your home, possibly striking your family.... maybe even a neighbor's home. Shotguns are best for home defense.

I had a rifle bullet travel right through my window, curtain, into the plastic base of the hamster cage, through his little igloo house, back out the cage, and the bedroom side of my wall before it stopped going through things.

The bullet was not mine, it actually happened while we were away from the house. Neighbor had his son in law over and he was messing with something, one fired off and into the house. Scared the hell out of the hamster though. Only slept on the opposite side of the cage after that. Lucky he didn't get hit.

Well we can debate this one all over the place but the shotgun for home defense is the best. 12 gauge with the first 2 shots of # 6 shot and if that doesn't slow them down you have 2 double 0 or 4 0 buckshot behind those. Using the smaller shot in a residential setting is better for everybody involved and if your close enough it will work just like a slug tearing a very large hole. You don't need to run out and buy a short barreled assault shotgun as a regular hunting one works good especially if your familiar with it. Any gauge shotgun will work from 410 to 10 gauge. The short barreled shotguns are better for moving around but not really needed. I like a pump like the 870 because I'm very familiar with one so that's what's handy and they are pretty cheaply priced for a good used one.

Hand guns are a personnel choice and you should find what you shoot the best be it revolver or semi auto and go with that. Personally I shoot a 45 caliber 1911 because if I have to use it will stop about anything in their tracks and won't travel as far as the higher velocity and smaller 9mm's, 357, 40's.

Just my 2 cents

TomA- I tend to agree with your thinking on this, I love 1911's and have 3. Now I need to get the short barrel shotgun pump!

Just remember - having a weapon and actually using it are 2 totally different things...

Thank you all for the advise. That was the reason for the post.. Well that and the fact I was (still am) severely Pissed Off those punks entered my home in the first place.
To clarify.. I am well aware the Carbine is the wrong choice for home defence and only keep it out of respect to my father in law.. And know full well the round will more than likely keep traveling and possibly hit something/some one beyond my control.. I would still own that possibility.
I think the shotgun is the way to go for the home and I'll be researching handguns for carry purposes at the local Gun range. I feel the advise of many here to try em out and see what fits is good advise. As well as professional training..
Thank you guys again for all the help...
Btw.. Thankfully the Wife was staying with a hurt friend that night.. I'm cool headed .. She ain't!!! Things would have probably gone way south had she been around.. Bottom line here.. I have the info I need to make informed choices and no one hurt.. And yeah.. The Assholes apparently tried the same crap somewhere else and we're not so lucky. Cops called last night . Based off my description of some very solid identifying information they were picked up and will be charged. I meet with the police today to dicuss options. .. Note to self.. If your going to Rob someone... Change out of your work uniform and ID badge first... Lmmfao... Hope to hell they can't breed

Sorry for the scary event! And glad it turned out in your favor! My guess is the forks weren't locked, even so, how would they have started it w/out the fob? Of course they probably didn't know that. Just running through the scenario in my head if it happen to me. I would've had two choices, the 9mm hollow points in the safe or the 45 w/hollow points in the truck. May have to think about a shot gun. I guess you think it's never going to happen to you.

I do appreciate the right and ability to protect myself and my family. I maintain a couple choices. I prefer my .223 around the ranch and I carry a 9mm concealed carry. ALL of my personal protection ammo is critical defense ammo. These have plenty of stopping power and will not penetrate beyond what is initially hit. Full metal jacketed ammo will go through walls and plenty of other material and keep going. I agree that a short shotgun is a good choice as well.
I don't know Florida laws on personal protection with a firearm, but I do recommend researching the subject. Some states do not permit the protection of property.
Just my .02.

Thanx for the info.. Yes the forks were locked.. I pull straight in and back out.. They had only move it from 90 to 45 degrees.. Think they were to stupid to understand this wasn't going to work .. Although there were plenty tool on the bench to mabey pry the lock.. Don't know.. Don't care.. Bike is safe and new garage door has better internal lock system and we will throw the book as far as possible at them this afternoon .Off to work now.. Take care guys and again all the info is invaluable to me

I personally really enjoyed the hamster story....

Florida does allow for the protection of property. As for the concealed carry it also very to get. It just takes time waiting on your appointment if you do the expatiated route. Then 90 days for the state to send the card.

Im with Tom & Mojo
Shot gun and make it a pump.
On my job we use pump shot guns an you would be (or maybe not) surprised how fast the sound of a shell being chambered will put a stop to things.
Even the biggest idiot of a crackhead knows what that sound is and if it ends up with legal action that can and will be used in your favor.
they had every opportunity to stop doing what they were doing prior to taking buckshot to the hide.
Another thing to keep In Mind if it comes down to it.
A warning shot !
lol, I know everyone is going to say screw the warning shot.
I didn't say the warning shot had to be prior to the hide shot did I ?

Get on your bad motor scooter and ride

RHSRA - Sounds like you are pointed in the right direction. Florida is a property protection State as noted. Not that I want to be on the news for shooting someone stealing a motorcycle but being in your House (garage) absolutely.

I will add though, that for around 60 bucks you can add the "speaker" module to your alarm that is already on the Special. Its plug and play and takes about 5 minutes. I think for 80 or so it comes with a pager as well.
